Man dies in city canal plunge

A man has died after jumping into a canal in Manchester city centre to help another man who had fallen in. One man fell about 12ft (4m) into the water on Canal Street in the early hours, hitting his head on the bank. A second man then apparently jumped in to help him, but never re-surfaced. Fire crews were called and the first man was pulled ashore on a rescue boat. The body of the second man, who was 45, was found four hours later by police divers using thermal imaging cameras. A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said it was unclear what led to the incident, which happened at about 0230 GMT on Canal Street near the junction with Chorlton Street. Anyone with information is being urged to contact them.
